Writing character reference: NO is about boundaries, identity, choice and truth.

Who is it for? Is there a special reason why it is you who has been asked to write it? Are there guidelines for the content? Will it be the truth? If challenged, can you stand firm on your opinion? Would any come back be embarrassing for you?

Writing character reference: HELLO is about: attention, openness and exchange.

What are the specifics? Are you ready to be fairly open about your opinions? What's in this for you? What's in it for the reader? Is the subject likely to gain advantage from this?

Writing character reference: THANK YOU is about appreciating, valuing and giving.

What is it about the person for whom you are writing a reference that you particularly appreciate and value? Are these qualities likely to be of use to the recipient? Can you say that this individual is as giving as you are by doing this favour?

Writing character reference: GOODBYE is about realization, decision, completion, and moving on.

Is the person decisive? Do they have courage to move in to the unknown? Can they quickly let go of the past? What about completions? Do they finish what they start?

Writing character reference: PLEASEis about vision, intention and cooperation.

Would you say this individual is thrusting? Are they good at choosing and asking for what they want? Can they take positive action? Can they easily enlist the help of others?

Writing character reference: SORRY is about responsibility, remorse, repair and release.

In your opinion, is this person humble? Are they responsible? Are they able to 'forgive and forget'? When they cause harm do they do all they can to rectify matters?

Writing character reference: YES is about permission, acceptance and agreement.

Is the person for whom you are writing a character reference able to find agreement with others, whole-heartedly endorsing declared intentions? Or is their willingness somewhat reluctant?
